Summary

This study examines the correlation between oxygen saturation (SpO2) measured by pulse oximetry and partial pressure of oxygen in the arteries (PaO2) in patients with hypovolemic shock. The research involved 39 patients with hypovolemic shock admitted to the Emergency Room between October 2019 and February 2020. The results showed a mean difference of 4.6 points between SpO2 and SaO2, with a greater difference in patients with lower systolic blood pressure. The Pearson correlation test revealed a correlation between SpO2 and PaO2 in patients with systolic blood pressure below 100 mmHg (r = 0.423, p = 0.020) and below 90 mmHg (r = 0.411, p = 0.041). The study concludes that clinicians should be aware of the potential difference between SpO2 and PaO2 in hypovolemic shock patients and that pulse oximetry can be a useful tool in monitoring oxygenation status, especially in hospitals with limited access to blood gas analysis.
