Summary

People with cancer are more likely to get infections due to changes in their immune system, and infections can be more serious. Cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can lower white blood cell counts, making it harder for the body to fight infection. Sepsis, a serious condition that occurs when the body overreacts to infection, can also develop, especially in people with a weak immune system or neutropenia.
