Summary

A retrospective study of 264 intestinal stomas performed in a surgical unit from 2015-2021 found that 82.57% were colostomies and 17.43% were ileostomies, with 39.02% being temporary. Postoperative complications included general systemic complications in 22.72% of cases, local complications in 31.81%, and common abdominal surgery complications in 35.60%, with a reintervention rate of 19.31%. Stoma closures were performed in 33% of patients with temporary stomas, and 25.24% of patients died in the early postoperative period. The study concluded that faecal diversion remains a therapeutic option for various abdominal diseases, mostly for colorectal cancer and its complications.
