Summary

Laryngeal paralysis is a loss of movement of the cartilage inside the larynx, resulting in increased airway resistance and difficulty breathing. It can be congenital or acquired, with the latter being the most common form, often seen in middle-aged to older large breed dogs. Clinical signs include a roaring noise when breathing, change in pitch of the bark, gagging when eating, and harsh cough. Diagnosis is made by directly visualizing the larynx under anesthesia. Treatment options include medical management, such as weight loss and exercise restriction, and surgical management, which involves placing a permanent suture to hold the larynx open. Post-operative care includes hospitalization, antibiotics, and anti-inflammatory medication, as well as dietary changes and exercise restriction. Complications following surgery can include fracture of the cartilage, acute swelling of the airway, seroma formation, and aspiration pneumonia.
