Summary

Nigeria has a high burden of neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), with many people lacking access to morbidity management and disability prevention (MMDP) services. A community-based participatory research (CBPR) approach was used to identify barriers to accessing health services and develop solutions. Barriers included poor knowledge, misinformation, cultural beliefs, and stigma. The study found that routine health programs can be adjusted to incorporate MMDP interventions, and that engaging stakeholders, including affected persons and community health workers, can lead to more inclusive and effective planning and evaluation of health interventions. The CBPR approach was effective in addressing power dynamics and enabling affected persons to shape the design of health interventions.
