Summary

Down Syndrome (DS) or Trisomy 21 is the most common autosomal chromosomal abnormality in newborns, with an incidence varying from 1 in 600 to 1 in 1000 in live-born infants. In India, the reported incidence is 1 in 1250. A study in North East India found 38 cases of Trisomy 21, with Free Trisomy 21 in 92.11% of cases, translocation trisomy 21 in 2.63%, and Mosaic Trisomy 21 in 5.26%. The male:female ratio was 1.38:1. Knowledge of cytogenetic types has important clinical implications for determining recurrence risk and guiding genetic counseling.
