Summary

Jesus leaves the praetorium around 12 o'clock, carrying His Cross, preceded by a mounted centurion and escorted by soldiers, with two thieves and a mob surrounding Him. They walk downhill through the town, then uphill, reaching the Gate of Ephraim, a redan gate that opens onto a square esplanade. After crossing the gate, Jesus stands face-to-face with His tomb. The area is not gloomy, with olive trees, citrons, figs, and other vegetation, as well as various birds and flowers, including cyclamens, wild daffodils, and red anemones. Calvary, where Jesus is crucified, is not a mountain, but a small chalky mound, about 16 feet above the surrounding roads, with the gibbet rising another 10 feet. From the Cross, Jesus can see the Gate of Ephraim, the Temple, the tower of Antonia, and the surrounding country, including the slopes of Nabi-Samouël, Mount Scopus, the Mount of Olives, and the Dead Sea.
