Summary

John Updike, America's most famous Updike, has a unique name that once drew laughter, but now commands respect, partly thanks to his 50-year contribution to the New Yorker. Born in 1932 in Shillington, Pennsylvania, Updike was raised in a farming and Protestant community, but his Aunt Mary introduced him to the New Yorker, broadening his cultural horizons. He began writing for the magazine at 22 and has since become a prolific novelist, short-story writer, poet, critic, and humorist. Updike's industry requires three desks, and his talk flows with richness comparable to his prose. Despite some criticism, he is regarded by many as the first fully harvested American writer since Henry James, with a unique blend of humor and poetic writing.
