Olena Palko's article examines the artistic and ideological development of Mykola Khvyl'ovyy, a Ukrainian writer who championed the idea of a Soviet Ukrainian literature independent from Russian patterns. Khvyl'ovyy's ideas, presented in his early prose and pamphlets during the Literary Discussion of 1925-1928, outlined his vision of Soviet Ukrainian culture. The article argues that during the 1920s, an autonomous cultural project in Soviet Ukraine was developed, but by the early 1930s, the all-Soviet canon gained prominence, and the project of an autonomous Soviet Ukrainian culture vanished, along with its main representatives, who were physically annihilated. Khvyl'ovyy's suicide in 1933 symbolized the end of the 1920s decade of transition, marked by relative ideological and political tolerance and artistic experimentation.
