Summary

Amanda E Krause and Jane W Davidson conducted an exploratory study of historical representations of love in an art gallery exhibition, focusing on visitor experiences of "Love: Art of Emotions" at the National Gallery of Victoria in 2017. The mixed-methods research used surveys and exit interviews to examine how visitors perceived the exhibition's content, particularly its emotional aspects. Results showed that familiarity with artworks and historical period, combined with motivations for attending, positively influenced the emotional experience. Thematic analyses of interview responses indicated that visitors had contemplative experiences, processing both emotional and historical content in relation to themselves. The findings have implications for designing future exhibitions and contribute to understanding how modern audiences perceive historical art exhibitions.
