The study of conservation and restoration interventions on monuments is as important as that of their structural elements or different construction phases. Equally interesting is the extraction of information related to the recording of authentic elements of Minoan architecture, as documented by excavations and subsequently constructed at the Palace of Knossos by Sir A. Evans and his collaborators. Wood was a basic structural element of the Minoan palace, ensuring maximum resistance to earthquakes. Sir A. Evans and his collaborators used wood in the restoration, mainly in the first phase, to protect and restore parts of the monument and to render its original form. Most of the wood used has not survived, having been replaced with metal beams or concrete in the second phase of interventions. Wood was used in two ways during the first restoration of the Palace of Knossos: new wood replaced the original wooden elements of the Minoan construction, and new wooden beams were used as additional structural support. The typical system of reinforcement with wood in the rubble walls of the Neopalatial buildings was restored by Sir A. Evans only in the fully restored areas of the monument.
