Summary

Charles County was organized in 1812, with present boundaries established in 1818. The county initially rented quarters, including rooms in Peck's Row, before buying a house and lot in 1833 to build a courthouse and jail. The 1846-49 courthouse, designed by Solomon Jenkins, featured a Doric portico and was built for around $9,000. After sustaining damage in a storm, the building was used until 1903, when it was razed. A new courthouse was constructed on "Clerks' Hill" using Jerome B. Legg's design, with construction commencing in 1900 and completion in 1903. The new courthouse featured a County Court room, Circuit Court room, and other offices, and is considered the finest example of Legg's turn-of-the-century courthouse design.
