Summary

For thousands of years, the Klamath Tribes have inhabited the upper Klamath River watershed, relying heavily on fishing, particularly salmon. The Klamath River, along with the Columbia River, provides the only Pacific salmon habitat east of the Cascade mountain range in the US. A Native American legend tells the story of the Coyote, who broke down a dam constructed by three Skookums, allowing salmon to migrate upstream, highlighting the importance of unimpeded salmon migration. Historically, Klamath River salmon migrations were the third-largest on the West Coast, supporting recreational and commercial fisheries. However, the construction of dams, particularly the Iron Gate Dam, has excluded ocean-going salmon from migrating to hundreds of kilometers of habitat upstream, reducing migrations by over 90%. Stakeholders have signed an agreement to decommission the lower four dams and restore salmon migration, with plans to reintroduce Chinook salmon into their historical habitats upstream from the dam.
