Lougheed was an automotive engineer and one of the first aeronautical engineers, publishing a book on the history of flight in 1909 and designing airplane engines, wings, and propellers. He had many patents to his name, including designs for automobile wheels and brakes, airplane wings and propellers, and other inventions. Lougheed died in 1943, and his widow sold the 101-acre property to the Arlington Girl Scout Council in 1948, which opened as a camp a month later.
