Summary

The People's War in Nepal, a 10-year civil conflict, began in 1996 as a guerrilla uprising against the state, escalating into a full-scale civil war between the state and Maoists, mostly comprising the rural local population. Factors like illiteracy, poverty, and economic underdevelopment contributed to the uprising. A spatial analysis of 75 districts found that conflict intensity varied, with some districts more prone to conflict incidents due to economic, demographic, and geographic factors. Four indicators - poverty incidence, illiteracy rate, road density, and conflict density - were used to calculate a conflict vulnerability rank for each district, with conflict density being the most important indicator. The analysis aimed to answer questions on conflict density, vulnerability, and the relationship between conflict and factors like illiteracy, poverty, and access to roads.
