Summary

David Bakalar was born in the US to a Lithuanian-born mother who immigrated in the 1920s. His father, who studied to be a rabbi, died when David was very young. David's brother, 13 years older, had to leave school after 8th grade to support the family. David grew up in a poor background with no support for science or arts, but he became interested in science and science fiction. He attended Lynn Classical High School, where a teacher, Roland Gingras, encouraged him to apply to Harvard. David applied to Harvard and MIT, and although he got into MIT with a $1,000 scholarship, he couldn't afford to attend. He eventually received a commuting scholarship to Harvard, which he started attending in the summer of 1942. After completing three years' worth of work in two years, David joined the Navy and became an electronic technician, attending school in Biloxi, Mississippi.
