Summary

Sonja Goedde found a "mystery box" at a rummage sale in Los Altos, California, in the 1990s, containing an old Bible and photographs. The Bible had a marriage record for John Stephen Kaneen and Julia Ann Galvin from 1857. After researching, Sonja discovered the items were related to a family that lived on the Comstock in Virginia City, Nevada, from the 1860s to 1917. John Kaneen was a gas works engineer, community leader, and politician, serving as mayor of Virginia City and treasurer of Storey County. The family had 12 or 13 children, with one daughter, Ellen "Nellie" Kaneen, continuing to live on the Comstock after 1885. Nellie attended the Fourth Ward School and later returned to Virginia City with her husband, George A. Morgan, and their children, who also attended the school. The items were donated to the Historic Fourth Ward School Museum & Archives, providing valuable historical information about the Kaneen family and their life on the Comstock.
