Summary

St. Vincent founded a Congregation that became international, and he dreamed of China, although the mission there began 39 years after his death. Nicolas Etienne, a missionary, asked to preach the gospel everywhere, including China, and financed the first journey of missionaries to China. The first phase of the mission (1699-1767) involved establishing a seminary for young Chinese men, but the missionaries fell out of favor with the imperial court due to controversy over Chinese rites. The second phase (1784-1820) saw the Vincentians return to China, staffing a seminary in Macau and taking over the Jesuit mission in Beijing, with missionaries like Nicolas-Joseph Raux and Jean-Joseph Ghislain using their scientific expertise to win favor at the emperor's court. The third phase (1820-1949) involved the growth of the Church in China, with native vocations and martyrs like Francis Regis Clet, and the influence of the Beijing mission on the birth of the Church in Korea.
