Summary

Horace George Wells was born on 7 March 1919, a motor mechanic who enlisted in 1939, and became a driver and 'batman' to the Colonel. He was captured at the fall of Singapore in 1942, held in Changi POW Camp, and allocated to Camp 1 or Work Group 1 on the Thai-Burma Railway. After surviving 3 years of atrocities, he was released in August 1945, and returned home to his wife Edna and daughter Hazel in Birmingham. He suffered from ill health, including malaria, and never spoke of his experiences as a POW. He had 9 children, was a gentle and loving husband and father, and died on 13 August 1983 at the age of 64.
