Summary

Mary Magdalene and another Mary went to the tomb, and after seeing the angels, the other women left, but Mary Magdalene and the other Mary stayed behind, and Jesus appeared to them, and they held onto his feet and worshiped him. Later, Mary Magdalene returned to the tomb and found it empty, and she ran to tell Peter and the other disciple, saying "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him." Jesus then appeared to her again and told her not to hold onto him, but to go and tell the others that he was ascending to his Father and their Father, to his God and their God.

The reason Jesus allowed Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to worship him and hold onto his feet in Matthew 28:9, but told Mary Magdalene not to hold onto him in John 20:17, is that in the second instance, she was holding onto him tightly, as if to keep him from leaving, and Jesus was telling her that he would be with them for a while longer, until his ascension.

The difference between Jesus giving the disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit in this chapter, and the descent of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, is that in this chapter, Jesus gave the disciples a specific gift, which is the authority to forgive sins, and the authority to bind and loose, which is the authority of the priesthood, whereas on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was given to all believers, and it is a general gift that enables believers to speak in different languages and to proclaim the gospel to all nations.
