The Tuen Mun-Chek Lap Kok Link (TMCLKL) is a roadway in Hong Kong that connects the Northwest New Territories, Hong Kong Boundary Crossing Facilities, and Hong Kong International Airport. The project involved building a 4.1-kilometer dual two-lane subsea tunnel, with a record-breaking depth of 55 meters below the surface, at a cost of USD 6.1 billion. Golder Associates Hong Kong undertook the geotechnical design and analysis, which required overcoming complex geological conditions, including soft marine deposits, alluvium, and rock. The team used Bentley's geotechnical applications, such as gINT, HoleBASE, MicroStation, and PLAXIS, to model soil behavior and settlement, and to optimize the design of the tunnel and its supporting structures. The use of these applications enabled the team to reduce the number of barrettes required, saving construction time, cost, and carbon dioxide emissions, and to ensure the quality and safety of the tunnel. The project was completed and opened to traffic on December 27, 2020, reducing travel time between Tuen Mun and Hong Kong International Airport to just 10 minutes.
