Summary

Sexual harassment at work is unwelcome sexual behaviour that offends, intimidates, or humiliates a person, and is reasonable to feel that way under the circumstances. It can be a one-off incident, and includes verbal comments, physical contact, displays of offensive pictures, and unwanted advances. Sexual harassment at work is against the law and can be a crime, including physically molesting a person, indecent exposure, and stalking. The effects of sexual harassment can include psychological distress, physical symptoms, and low job satisfaction. If someone thinks they are being sexually harassed at work, they can tell someone they trust, avoid being alone with the offender, and talk to their doctor. They can also use informal or formal approaches to deal with the situation, including reporting incidents to a contact person, talking to coworkers, and making a formal complaint to the Fair Work Commission, WorkSafe Tasmania, or the Australian Human Rights Commission. There are time limits to make a complaint, including 21 days to lodge a complaint with the Fair Work Commission, 12 months under Tasmanian law, and two years under Federal Anti-Discrimination Law.
