Francis Poulenc a imaginé l'Histoire de Babar en juillet 1940 pour amuser une petite cousine. Il a ensuite improvisé la musique au piano et décida de la retranscrire et d'en affiner le contenu. L'histoire du célèbre éléphanteau créé par Jean et Cécile de Brunhof en 1931 est à la base de ce spectacle musical.
