Summary

Spent nuclear fuel is stored in passively cooled stainless steel canisters, which can be susceptible to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) due to environmental factors, microstructure variability, and material composition. Researchers investigated the boundaries of SCC to varying sensitivities, including temperature, chloride composition, and residual stress level, to inform canister monitoring and lifetime prediction models. The study generated crack growth kinetics for multiple material systems and environments, and demonstrated a framework for coupling these kinetics with a life prediction model to inform risk assessments of nuclear waste canisters. Temperature was found to play a prominent role in crack growth rate, with increasing temperature increasing SCC susceptibility. The goal of this work is to understand the sensitivities of lifetime predictions to individual parameters, and to inform a framework to quantify and manage a risk-based ranking of storage sites.
