Researchers studied thermal acclimation of leaf photosynthetic traits in an evergreen woodland, testing the "coordination hypothesis" which predicts that carboxylation capacity (Vcmax) and electron-transport capacity (Jmax) acclimate to growth temperature. They found that Vcmax, Jmax, and mitochondrial respiration (Rdark) increased with temperature, but their values standardized to 25°C declined, consistent with the coordination hypothesis. The study suggests that neglecting acclimation to growth temperature could lead to incorrect model estimates of ecosystem responses to climate change.
