Summary

Aerosol dynamics and dispersion of radioactive particles were studied to understand the impact of advanced aerosol dynamic processes on Lagrangian particle dispersion models (LPDMs) used in radioactive preparedness. A fictitious failure of a nuclear power plant was simulated for three geographically and atmospherically different sites, incorporating a Lagrangian single-trajectory box model with advanced cloud parameterization and detailed ambient-aerosol dynamics. The results showed that modelling wet deposition with advanced cloud parameterization and including detailed aerosol dynamics can significantly influence simulated levels of airborne and deposited activity, highlighting the potential necessity for implementation of more detailed representation of general aerosol dynamic processes into LPDMs.
