Researchers determined the emissions of xenon-133 and caesium-137 into the atmosphere from the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. They used inverse modeling, combining initial release rate estimates with atmospheric transport model results and measurement data from several dozen stations. The total release of xenon-133 was estimated to be 15.3 EBq, more than twice the total release from Chernobyl, while the total emission of caesium-137 was estimated to be 36.6 PBq, about 43% of the estimated Chernobyl emission. The study found that the radioactive plume was advected over Eastern Honshu Island, depositing a large fraction of caesium-137 on land surfaces, and that 6.4 PBq of caesium-137 were deposited over Japanese land areas, with most of the rest falling over the North Pacific Ocean.
