Summary

Biochar is a stable form of charcoal produced through pyrolysis, a process involving high temperatures and low or no oxygen conditions, potentially lasting hundreds or thousands of years. This process also yields SynGas and bio-oil, which can be captured for bio-fuel production. Biochar differs from normal fire charcoal in having higher carbon content and lower greenhouse gas emissions due to the low oxygen conditions. It has a porous nature, as shown by an electron microscope image. Biochar-rich soils, such as Amazonian Terra Preta, exhibit higher pH, phosphorus, CEC, and calcium and magnesium levels compared to regular soils.
