Summary

Cassava is the staple food of nearly a billion people in 105 countries, with Africa producing 50 million metric tonnes in 2009. However, yields are far below the global average due to poor agronomic practices, diseases such as Cassava Mosaic Disease (CMD) and Cassava Brown Streak Disease (CBSD), and limited market outlets. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched a regional campaign to boost the capacity of countries in the Great Lakes Region to cope with these diseases, with achievements including the provision of virus-free planting material to over 500,000 farmers and the establishment of National Cassava Steering Committees. The project aims to continue supporting government staff, farmers, and stakeholders in disease identification and surveillance, and to establish new synergies with multi-donor programs to promote the cassava sub-sector.
