Summary

Japanese quail chicks and adults were exposed to cyanobacterial biomass for 15 days, with daily doses of approximately 224.4 ng microcystins per gram of body weight. No deaths occurred, but biochemical responses differed between age groups. Adults showed increased lactate dehydrogenase, decreased glucose and total antioxidant capacity, and 15-20% inhibition of acetylcholinesterase activity. Chicks had hypoproteinaemia, increased triglycerides, uric acid, and total antioxidant capacity, and decreased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol. Contrary to expectations, chicks were not more susceptible to cyanobacterial biomass effects, possibly due to their physiological preparation for oxidative stress associated with hatching.
