Summary

The human cathelicidin antimicrobial peptide (CAMP) is induced by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and primary bile salts through activation of the vitamin D receptor and farnesoid X receptor (FXR). This study demonstrates that plant polyphenol xanthohumol (XN) acts as an FXR ligand, regulating CAMP gene expression in the GI tract, and that combinations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and XN or its metabolite 8-prenylnaringenin cooperatively induce endogenous CAMP gene expression. A transgenic mouse model expressing the human CAMP gene was also characterized, showing that the human gene is expressed in immune and epithelial barrier cells and induced by 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D.
