Summary

Substantial progress has been made in understanding the effects of normative aging on eye movements during reading. Research has shown that aging affects the visual and cognitive systems, leading to changes in eye movements, including decreased visual processing efficiency, lower acuity, and reduced ability to perceive fine visual detail. These changes can contribute to difficulties with reading, such as visual blur, problems with fine-print, and issues with reading in low light conditions. Additionally, age-related declines in attentional and motor control, as well as memory capabilities, may also impact eye movement control and reading comprehension. However, some abilities, such as crystalized intelligence, which includes knowledge gained from a lifetime of experience, appear to be stable across adulthood and may offset declines in other areas.
