Summary

The mineral alterations in Ankur iron ore, NE Sudan, caused by oxygenated pore-water, were studied using an electron-scanning microscope. The alteration products include goethite, hematite, hydromuscovite, chlorite, kaolinite, dolomite, gypsum, and amorphous silica. Pyrite is the most affected mineral, breaking down into iron-rich flakes and sulfates, which can form diagenetic sulfate minerals like gypsum. Magnetite is partly or entirely oxidized into hematite and/or goethite, which are reprecipitated in situ. Limited break down of amphiboles, micas, and felspars also occurs, producing hydromuscovites, chlorite, kaolinite, and amorphous silica. The alteration mechanisms are influenced by the stability framework of the primary mineralogical composition and the nature of the pore-water.
