Summary

Researchers demonstrated single rovibronic level excitation in benzene, resolving individual rotational states using Doppler-free two-photon absorption with narrow bandwidth pulsed laser light. Fluorescence decay measurements showed a pure exponential behavior, indicating the nonradiative rate is independent of rotational quantum numbers in the statistical limit. The decrease in lifetime for perturbed states was attributed to mixing with a background state. The study investigated the population lifetime of individual rotational states in benzene, whose electronic relaxation processes are believed to be in the statistical limit.
