Summary

This study assesses the success of reforestation in restoring biodiversity and ecosystem functioning by examining dung beetle species diversity, community composition, functional diversity, and ecological functions along a restoration chronosequence. The results show that species richness, abundance, biomass, and functional richness increase with restoration age, while functional evenness and functional divergence decrease. Biodiversity metrics explain 47-74% of the variation in functions mediated by dung beetles, with functional trait-based indices providing greater explanatory power than traditional species-based metrics. The study demonstrates the potential of tropical forest restoration to recover faunal species diversity, functional diversity, and ecosystem functions, and highlights the importance of using functional trait-based metrics to predict ecosystem functionality.
