Summary

Polytrichastrum formosum (Hedw.) G.L. Smith has been identified from the Sandakphu region in Darjeeling, India, marking its first report from the Indian territory. The species is characterized by its large, robust size, tomentose stem, lanceolate and serrulate leaves, prominent costa, and numerous lamellae covering the ventral surface of the leaves. This finding extends the range of distribution of the taxon in India within Asia, with previous reports from China, E. Nepal, Europe, Japan, N. Africa, N. America, and Russia. Indian plants of P. formosum slightly differ from P. formosum var. formosum in having 3-4 cells high lamellae on the leaf surface and slightly longer basal cells.
