Summary

Stratospheric ozone depletion since the late 1970s is expected to recover due to the Montreal Protocol, affecting tropospheric chemistry and ozone air quality. A global chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) was used to examine the implications of stratospheric ozone recovery. The results show that with full recovery of stratospheric ozone, ozone column increases range from 1% over low latitudes to over 10% over polar regions. The sensitivity factor of troposphere ozone photolysis rate is negative, indicating that stratospheric ozone recovery affects tropospheric ozone destruction rates more than production rates. Significant decreases in surface ozone photolysis rates and increases in surface ozone are simulated, with global average tropospheric OH decreasing by 1.7% and global average lifetime of tropospheric ozone increasing by 1.5%. The increased lifetimes of tropospheric ozone enhance intercontinental transport of ozone and global pollution, particularly in summer. The global background ozone attributable to Asian emissions is calculated to increase by up to 15% or 0.3 ppbv in the Northern Hemisphere in response to stratospheric ozone recovery.
