Summary

Researchers used a coupled AOGCM model (REMO/MPI-OM/HD) to simulate North Atlantic-European shelves ocean-atmosphere circulation, focusing on ocean-shelf exchange processes. Numerical experiments (1948-2006) with and without tidal forcing showed that tides reduce mean currents in the open ocean, amplify them along the North European shelf edge, and lead to reduced North Atlantic SST, except near tidal constituent amphidromic points where SST increases up to 3K.
