Summary

Researchers developed a protocol to extract mastitis pathogen DNA from sample collecting cards, allowing for easier and cheaper bulk tank milk (BTM) bacteriology testing. The study found that storage and shipment of BTM samples with collecting cards did not impair PCR testing results. The technique was tested on 10 BTM samples and yielded similar positive or negative results as direct testing from liquid milk. A pilot epidemiological study estimated the current herd-prevalence of S. agalactiae, S. aureus, and M. bovis in Europe to be 8.9%, 32.9%, and 1.3%, respectively. The use of sample collection cards may offer a new opportunity for transportation of milk samples, potentially exempting them from strict transport regulations.
