Summary

Bacteria and fungi were isolated from face masks worn by 109 volunteers, with higher bacterial colony numbers on the face-side and higher fungal colony numbers on the outer-side. Longer mask usage increased fungal colony numbers. Pathogenic microbes, including Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, Aspergillus, and Microsporum, were found, prompting a proposal that immunocompromised individuals avoid reusing masks to prevent microbial infection.
