Summary

April 25th marks 30 years since the M7.2, 6.5, and 6.6 earthquakes, the most expensive earthquake disaster in North Coast history, which also raised awareness of tsunami hazards in the Pacific Northwest. The author, Lori Dengler, recalls the earthquakes, including the first one striking at 11:06 AM, and her experiences during the event. The earthquakes occurred in the Cape Mendocino area, a seismically active region due to the interaction of three plates: Gorda, Pacific, and North America. The sequence included foreshocks, such as a 6.0 earthquake in Honeydew eight months prior, and aftershocks, with the 6.5 and 6.6 quakes occurring offshore of Cape Mendocino. The earthquakes resulted in over $60 million in property losses, with the worst loss being the Scotia shopping center destroyed in a blaze, and at least 60 structures knocked off foundations, but no fatalities.
