Summary

The fruit of Averrhoa carambola (star fruit) was found to contain a depressant agent with properties similar to those of tranquilizers. The extract, SFX, increased barbiturate-induced sleeping time and reduced activity in mice, suggesting a centrally acting depressant agent. However, SFX did not cause unconsciousness, anesthesia, or analgesia, and the animals remained conscious and responsive to painful stimuli. The pharmacological effects of SFX mirror those of tranquilizers, and attempts are being made to elucidate the structure of the active ingredient.
