Grass carp are used for biological management of hydrilla and other aquatic weeds in Florida, offering a unique approach to control these plants. The fish is a living organism that requires knowledge of plant life cycles and feeding behavior to effectively manage weed problems. Grass carp are not useful for all aquatic plant problems but can manage certain weeds effectively and economically. They have been introduced to over 50 countries for aquatic weed control and aquaculture, and in Florida, they were introduced in 1970 to control hydrilla. A sterile triploid grass carp was developed to prevent reproduction and negative impact on sport fish. The triploid fish has the same aquatic weed control capabilities as the diploid and can be screened to ensure sterility. Grass carp prefer submersed plants, particularly soft tips of young tender plants, and can grow up to 40 pounds in Florida with an apparent life span of approximately 10 years.
