Summary

Gyromitra esculenta, a common edible spring fungus, was studied in a Central Finnish spruce forest. Small initials of the fungus were marked and photographed in autumn and spring. The initials developed into young fruit bodies under the snow in spring, but not during an unusually warm autumn. The observations support the theory that fruit body production is regulated by a mycochrome-like pigment depending on day length. Semi-cultivation experiments with organic material improved natural yields, and breaking the soil surface or adding organic material increased yields. The study confirmed earlier reports of autumnal initials and their development into fruit bodies in the following spring.
