ITE College West students won the SembCorp Marine Green Wave Environmental Care Competition with their "Horseshoe Crab Propagation System" project. The system, designed and manufactured by Eunos Chong and his teammates, aims to repopulate horseshoe crab species in the wild and educate Singaporeans about the endangered creatures. The team bred hundreds of horseshoe crabs in captivity, releasing most back into the wild, and won $8,000 and a work attachment with BP Singapore. They plan to improve the system to increase the survival rate of the horseshoe crabs from 20 to 50%. The competition, now in its 15th year, received 279 project submissions and aims to promote environmental sustainability among students. Other winning projects included a "Water Saver" device and a cellulose aerogel material for oil spills. Minister for Education Ng Chee Meng encouraged students to explore beyond textbooks and push boundaries, emphasizing the importance of informal learning spaces and practical problem-solving.
