Summary

Myrtus communis L. is a Mediterranean shrub with antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. Its fruit and leaves are used for essential oils and as a locally made juice ingredient. Over-exploitation has reduced its geographical coverage and population size. An ethnobotanical study in Al-Jabal Al-Akhdar, Libya, found that Myrtle is used as a flavoring agent (90%), stomachic (10.9%), and for diabetes (60%), anti-septic, blood purification, and constipation (6.6%). An allelopathic experiment showed that Myrtle leaf aqueous extract significantly decreased germination percentage, shoot length, and root length of recipient species Hordeum vulgare and Triticum aestivum, while increasing seedling dry weight.
