Summary

Japan Atomic Energy Agency has been implementing the Mizunami Underground Research Laboratory (MIU) Project to develop investigation techniques for the geological environment and engineering techniques for a deep underground laboratory in crystalline rock. The project aims to evaluate the excavation disturbed zone due to excavation of shafts and research galleries. An equivalent continuum model based on crack tensor theory was applied to predict rock mass behavior, including excavation disturbance. The study calculated crack tensor based on geological observation in the MIU and compared it with previous results and estimated values from pilot borehole investigation. The results showed that the calculated displacement based on the previous crack tensor was smaller than the measured displacement, and the crack tensor based on geological observation was more accurate. The study also estimated the crack tensor at 500m in depth and performed numerical simulation to understand realistic rock mass behavior due to excavation, showing an increase in convergence and stress in the support system.
