Summary

JAEA conducted measurements and analysis of in-vessel component activation and gamma dose rate distribution in the experimental fast reactor Joyo. The goal was to evaluate the activation of the upper core structure (UCS) to design a transportation cask for the damaged UCS. A measurement system was developed to measure gamma dose rates in the reactor vessel, and calibration and performance tests were conducted. The results showed that the total activation of the UCS was approximately 5.3×10^14 Bq, with 60Co being the main radioactive nuclide. The maximum surface dose rate of the UCS was 124 Sv/h. The measurement results were used to reduce the weight of the shielding cask to less than 100 tons, making it possible to replace the UCS without equipment modification.
