Summary

Thermodynamic optimization of multi-stage cryogenic systems is feasible with high-capacity, multi-stage, long-life cryocoolers. The optimal operating point for the total system lies between the optimum operating point of the selected cryocooler and the theoretical optimum of the system being cooled. A methodology is presented for identifying the optimum thermodynamic operating point, which yields the upper stage temperatures and the optimum cryocooler. The method is based on entropy generation minimization techniques and considers temperature-dependent properties, heat generating sources, and cryocooler operating characteristics.
