Summary

Orbital debris in low Earth orbit (LEO) poses a significant threat due to collisional cascading, with hundreds of thousands of pieces larger than 1cm. A proposed solution uses a high-power pulsed laser system to create plasma jets, slowing objects and causing them to re-enter and burn up in the atmosphere. Recent advances in low-cost, light-weight modular design for large mirrors and calculations of laser-induced orbit changes make laser orbital debris removal (LODR) a cost-effective solution. No other solutions address the whole problem of large and small debris. A LODR system will have multiple uses beyond debris removal, and international cooperation is essential for building and operating such a system.
